On August 14, 2024 at 10am the Kolker room was well populated by experimental and theoretical physicists mostly. Tianyu Yang’s thesis was on the agenda for today and it was a wonderful presentation which also served as his thesis defense. The topic is one of the most important results of the last years: the precision measurement of the W boson mass. It was a somewhat unusual defense because the final number was not yet known at the time of the presentation. The committee members: CP (chair), Eluned Smith (LHCb) and Wati Taylor (theorist in the CTP) were content to rely on the detailed presentation of the methodology including a detailed discussion of all uncertainties without seeing the final number.
Justin did an excellent job in finding the right level to keep people interested and not shock them with too much details of this highly complex analysis. Justin will be moving on to research position at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. Best of luck and congratulations Dr. Yang!
Note after release (September 6, 2024): We also finally found Justin’s Chalkatar* on the board …
*Chalkatar is an Avatar on the student chalk board.
