A W Boson Mass Hackathon at MIT

The value of the W boson mass has recently received a lot of attention because CDF—the PPC is also a part of CDF—has published a very precise measurement which does not agree with what the standard model predicts.

from here.

While it is not straightforward to say what this means, it might just simply be that there is the first crack in the standard model. It is urgent that the community rallies around the W boson mass and clarifies this potential breakdown.

The PPC will in this spirit host a W boson mass Hackathon at MIT from January 9-13, 2023 during which we plan to make a detailed plan with our colleagues from CMS how to produce a measurement of this important parameter in the shortest possible time while still making a great measurement. While the majority of the hackathon is for CMS members only we have one day of open session. Come by and enjoy a detailed discussion between theorists and experimentalists trying to figure out how to make this measurement best.
