The large hadron collider (LHC) has completed its data taking on November 28, 2022 about two weeks earlier than originally planned earlier. Rising energy costs mostly due to the conflict in Ukraine has forced CERN to make adjustments. According to the present planning data taking should resume in April 2023. The 2022 run of the LHC delivered 41.49/fb and CMS recorded 38.04/fb as shown in the picture below. The rate at which data was accumulated is very promising for the next years and a large dataset we are expecting a large Run 3 dataset to be available.
“If electricity prices remain high in the long term, this could mean that we have to reduce the physics program or stretch it out over time,” said Joachim Mnich, Director for Research and Computing.
For the PPC this means there is a little more time for analysis for those, who are actively involved in the data taking process, but the pressure is on to really finish all the Run 2 legacy analyses and study the Run 3 data in detail.
