In PPC’s recent uninterrupted series of visiting students, Yusuf Seday has been another unique, productive, and pleasant visitor. Hailing from Turkey, he joined KIT (no spelling mistake) and our dear colleague Markus Klute sent him over for a 3 month stint. We decided his impact on Dark Photon work using the freshly taken Run 3 data would be the best analysis to be later converted into his masters thesis at KIT. So, he joined Qier in the effort and he truly made the most of it. In the analysis, he focused on optimizing the event selection using deep learning techniques, which he evaluated on the upsilon resonance as a benchmark, and he then evaluated the efficiency on muons using a tag-‘n-probe method. Him and Ludovico then studied signal and background modeling, which they were able to optimize for best fit. His work culminated in preliminary limits on the dark photon using Run 3, which we very much look forward to becoming realized.
But Yusuf has not only been an active Dark Photon analyzer, he has also been an active member of our community in the Friday after work activities (beer at the Muddy) or in the MIT Battle of the Bands competition (as a one man-band!), and has even managed to enjoy the cold and often-rainy Boston spring.
Two things to mention here at last: an acute appendicitis with a following emergency removal surgery in his last two weeks did not deter his analysis efforts, but unfortunately we were not able to take advantage of Yusuf’s hockey playing skills. Clearly we need to get him back here to join the graduate student program and the intramural hockey league 🙂
In any case, Thank you and all the best Yusuf! it has been a blast, and come back any time.
