Joel Butler is a former CMS Spokesperson (2016-18), but for us much more importantly, he is a PhD out of our own PPC (PhD MIT, 1969-1975, Advisor: Lawrence Rosenson), and he has been awarded with the APS 2026 Panofsky Prize in Experimental Particle Physics. The Panofsky Prize is one of the most prestigious award in particle physics and was announced in the morning of November 6 by the American Physical Society (APS). The citation is:
For wide-ranging scientific, technical, and strategic contributions to particle physics, particularly exceptional leadership in fixed target quark flavor experiments at Fermilab and collider physics at the Large Hadron Collider.
The PPC is exceedingly proud of this wonderful award bestowed on one of its former members and welcomes Joel into the midst of the ‘Heroes in Physics’.

The thesis supervisor is Lawrence Rosenson, who did not sign this version of the thesis. This instance is available in the PPC archive and must have been added in 1975.
