EWK Workshop – Fermilab, July 2026

The Electroweak (EKW) Precision Workshop was held at Fermilab, July 6-10, 2026. Convening experimentalists and theorists interested in these problems from all collaborations and around the world, the week-long workshop sought to define the strategy for the future of precision measurements in the LHC era and beyond in the wake of the ultra-precise measurements, like that of the mass of the W boson which our group accomplished last year, that have established the LHC as a machine for precision measurement, and threaten the long-held LEP supremacy.

The week was organized “Les Houches style”: the first two days we heard and gave talks that summarized the latest developments across the field. After that, a blackboard session was held to decide the remaining of the week’s schedule based on the discussions of the first two days. We settled on working sessions on the topics that aroused the most interest: bridging experimentalists’ and theorists’ approaches to PDFs, setting up consistent treatment of theoretical uncertainties, developments on resummation predictions, the latest fitting tools, and many more, as well as sessions focused on specific measurements: W mass, Z mass, electroweak mixing angle, and the strong coupling constant.

Throughout the week, we got to hear many interesting talks delivered by the workshop members to the broader community. In particular, Christoph made the case for precision measurements at the LHC and beyond to a filled lecture hall, drawing from the broad and rich history of this field, which has accompanied, and often led, the development of high energy physics as a whole. A historical perspective that contextualized the current effort, and motivated it for the future.

What grows out of this land? The flowers bloom in the prairie. The tired physicists find relief under the July Sun.

The week was as intense as it was successful. For students like myself, interacting directly with experimentalists and theorists who have driven some of the most precise measurements in the field, who are working on the frontier of precision QCD and EWK calculations, PDF determinations, statistical techniques to deal with our massive and complicated data, and understanding of our detectors, was a unique and massively enriching experience. So often throughout the week, after listening to a talk or some discussion, did we look at each other and say “wow, I now actually understand this”, so often did we ask any question that came to us or proposed some idea and we could discuss it with all the relevant experts in the same room, so often the exchange between different people working on different ends of the same problem resulted in a common strategy for the benefit of all. There was a distinct feeling that from both the theory and the experimental side we were constantly pushing into new directions and had concrete plans for how to accomplish it.

We came back from this workshop with heads full of new ideas, excited for what the future of precision measurements has to hold and to throw our efforts behind it.
